Wild and Barefoot Adventures is a non-profit organization.  At Wild and Barefoot Adventures our goal is to provide accessible, place-based outdoor learning for families following all educational styles.  The locations listed are the best family friendly outdoor adventures in Oregon and Washington.  Experience these adventures as stand-alone trips or pair them with our linked nature-based unit studies!  Each adventure has suggested learning topics relevant to that location and detailed in our Wild and Barefoot Curriculum (Coming soon).

Adventuring with young children can be daunting, even if you are a seasoned hiker.  Too often trails labeled as “family friendly” overlook risk factors such as steep drop offs that may be dangerous for young children.  Wouldn’t it be nice to have a database of the best family friendly outdoor places and link them to educational experiences?

What is place-based learning?

 

*Place-based outdoor learning is an educational approach that embraces the local environment as a classroom.  Students have the opportunity to engage with their surroundings, observe real-world phenomena, and understand the relevance of their learning in a tangible way.  By taking education outside, students are exposed to a host of benefits.  Learning in a natural environment stimulates curiosity and captures students' interest.  The outdoor setting provides a dynamic and multi-sensory experience that engages students in a more hands-on and experiential way.  Outdoor learning fosters a sense of connection, appreciation, and lifelong respect for the natural world.

Wild and Barefoot Nature Group is a growing community that uses the nature studies designed by Wild and Barefoot Adventures to foster place-based learning. This expanding chapter of Wild and Barefoot Adventures provides the needed materials and step by step guide to successfully run a Wild and Barefoot Nature Group.
